Grinding Appliances Caroline Springs

You may be grinding your teeth without even realising

Teeth grinding or bruxism occurs a lot among children. Most children however will grow out of this on their own when they enter their teenage years.

Teeth grinding becomes dangerous when sufferers are grinding their teeth during sleep, this is called nocturnal bruxism. Often individuals will be causing oral damage to themselves without even realising.

Symptoms of nocturnal bruxism

So how do people realise they have nocturnal bruxism? There are a number of symptoms, some of which are quite painful and uncomfortable:

  • Increased sensitivity to hot and cold food
  • Pain in facial and neck areas
  • Poor sleeping schedule
  • Waking with obvious jaw pain

An unaligned jaw and bite will encourage teeth grinding. In this case, an orthodontic treatment might be the most suitable option. For mild cases an oral mouth guard can help. Other lifestyle factors including stress, anxiety or a poor diet can all contribute to teeth grinding.

A dental professional will be best positioned to recommend the suitable course of treatment.

If you think you may be suffering as a result of teeth grinding, it’s important to seek medical attention.

To Note: Any dental procedure carries risks which also may depend on your general health. This will be discussed with you prior to any dental intervention.

Before proceeding you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner such as your dentist or your doctor.
